The funeral service for the prominent political figure, who passed away on Wednesday at age 80 while undergoing medical treatment in India, attracted thousands of mourners and foreign dignitaries to the stadium in Nairobi, the capital.

Odinga’s body arrived before 9 a.m. under military escort, highlighting his status as a statesman.

The large turnout reflects his significant influence as a freedom fighter, former political prisoner, and a pivotal force in Kenyan politics.

Deadly Clashes Cast Shadow Over Vigil

The solemn proceedings were preceded by a tragic event on Thursday when security forces used live rounds and teargas to disperse large crowds gathered at the stadium where Odinga’s body was lying in state.

The clashes resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals, adding tension to a nation already mourning a figure known for challenging authorities and shaping the country’s democratic development.

A Contentious Legacy and Final Journey

Odinga, who made five unsuccessful bids for the presidency, was a persistent opposition leader whose campaigns often unsettled the political establishment.

His enduring influence solidified his role as a kingmaker and a champion for many.

Raila will be interred on Sunday next to his father, the late Jaramogi Oginga, at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, concluding a significant chapter in Kenyan history.
