Nigerian president orders major military shake up as rumours of a coup attempt swirl
Security Update in Nigeria
On Fri, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu announced the replacement of several top security officials amidst ongoing security challenges in the country.
Changes in Security Leadership
The President dismissed Christopher Musa, Chief of Defense Staff; Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff; and Hassan Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff. Olufemi Oluyede, the former Chief of Army Staff, has been appointed as the new Chief of Defense Staff.
New appointments include W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, I. Abbas as Chief of Air Staff, and S.K. Aneke as Chief of Naval Staff. The President has directed these officials to enhance the professionalism and vigilance of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Security Challenges
Nigeria continues to face significant security issues, including activities from armed groups such as Boko Haram and its splinter factions, as well as criminal groups involved in kidnapping and looting. These groups have been responsible for repeated attacks on military and civilian targets.
Earlier this year, the United States approved a $346 million arms sale to Nigeria to support its efforts against insurgency and criminal activities.
The Nigerian defense headquarters recently denied rumors of a coup plot, although public concerns remain high due to recent military takeovers in other West African countries.
