Background and Context
Boko Haram has been active since 2009, with objectives including the opposition of Western education and the imposition of Sharia law. The conflict has expanded beyond Nigeria’s borders, affecting neighboring countries and resulting in significant civilian casualties and displacement.
The insurgency has led to the loss of an estimated 35,000 civilian lives and displaced over 2 million individuals, as reported by the United Nations. Following the death of former leader Abubakar Shekau in 2021, Boko Haram split into two factions. One of these, the Islamic State West Africa Province, has intensified attacks on military targets.
Recent Developments
In response to ongoing security challenges, the United States has approved a potential sale of military equipment valued at $346 million to support Nigeria’s defense capabilities.
