UNICEF Visit Highlights Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan
A recent visit by UNICEF officials to Sudan has underscored the severity of the country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis resulting from ongoing conflict.
Visit Overview
Deputy Executive Director Ted Chaiban visited Khartoum and other areas, interacting with children at a digital center and observing activities such as drawing and toy assembly.
Impact of Conflict
The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023 due to escalated tensions between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has resulted in significant displacement and hunger. The regions of Darfur and Kordofan have seen concentrated fighting.
Need for Assistance
Chaiban emphasized the need for substantial aid, particularly in el-Fasher, North Darfur, where the fighting has significantly increased the number of displaced individuals this year.
UNICEF reports that the conflict has affected every child in Sudan, with many experiencing psychological trauma. Footage showed children undergoing malnutrition screening, with the World Food Programme noting that over 24 million people face acute food insecurity.
