Diplomacy and Regional Challenges
On Wed, Sudanese General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan held discussions with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi in Cairo. This meeting focused on aligning strategies amidst the ongoing conflict in Sudan and regional tensions related to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
Conflict in Sudan
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a conflict between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. This has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands of lives lost and over 14 million people displaced. The leaders discussed various international and regional efforts aimed at ceasing the violence and restoring stability to Sudan.
Concerns Over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam
A significant topic of discussion was the GERD, a project valued at nearly $5 billion on the Blue Nile. Both leaders expressed serious concerns regarding the dam, attributing recent flooding in their countries to its construction. This shared concern emphasizes a unified approach against Ethiopia, addressing the potential impact on vital water resources and adding complexity to their crisis management efforts.
