Bus Accident in Northern South Africa
A tragic bus accident occurred on Sun, Oct 8, 2023, when a bus veered off the N1 highway and plunged down an embankment near Louis Trichardt, approximately 400 kilometers north of Pretoria, South Africa. The incident resulted in the deaths of at least 42 individuals, with an additional 49 passengers sustaining injuries.
Casualty and Injury Details
The Transport Ministry reported that the victims included seven children, 17 men, and 18 women. Six individuals were critically injured, and 31 others sustained serious injuries and were transported to various hospitals. One critically injured child was airlifted to a hospital for urgent care.

Authorities released images showing the bus overturned in the embankment, with rescuers conducting searches for victims. Rescue operations continued late into Sunday night, as confirmed by the Limpopo provincial government.

The bus was en route to Zimbabwe and carried passengers who were Zimbabwean and Malawian nationals. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation, according to the Transport Ministry.
