No foul play in the death of South African Ambassador, authorities say

International Affairs

No signs of foul play have been found in the death of South Africa’s Ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, according to authorities.

The exact cause of death remains undetermined. French investigators are collaborating with South African officials as the inquiry progresses.

Mthethwa was found outside the Hyatt Regency in Paris on Tuesday. His room’s 22nd-floor window had been forced open, yet there were no indications of a struggle. A message to his wife suggested suicidal intent; however, the family has not accepted this explanation.

A five-member team from South Africa’s police has been dispatched to France to assist in the investigation.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to deliver the eulogy at Mthethwa’s funeral on Sunday.

Mthethwa had served as ambassador since late 2023 and previously held multiple cabinet positions, including roles in arts & culture and sports.
