Ethiopia Accuses Eritrea of Hostile Preparations

On Mon, Oct 2, 2023, Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Gedion Timothewos, addressed a letter to the United Nations Secretary-General, accusing Eritrea of preparing for military aggression. This development marks an escalation in the ongoing tensions over control of the Red Sea region.

Allegations Against Eritrea

The letter alleges that Eritrea is collaborating with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), an opposition faction situated in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. Ethiopia accuses both Eritrea and the TPLF of financially supporting, mobilizing, and directing armed groups in the Amhara region, where conflicts with the federal army are ongoing.

As of now, Eritrea has not issued a formal response to these claims.

Historical Context

The relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea has been deteriorating, echoing their historical conflicts. Eritrea secured the Red Sea coastline upon gaining independence from Ethiopia in 1993. A border war ensued from 1998 to 2000, resulting in significant casualties.

Efforts to ease tensions were made by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who assumed office in 2018. Nonetheless, Ethiopia’s recent endeavors to regain Red Sea access have further strained relations with Eritrea.

Future Negotiations

Despite the current situation, Ethiopia has expressed a willingness to engage in negotiations with Eritrea concerning the Red Sea access issue, as stated in the foreign minister’s letter.
