Tension in Cameroon Prior to Election Results Announcement

Cameroon is experiencing significant tension as the nation awaits the official announcement of the election results by the Constitutional Council, scheduled for Thu, Oct 23, 2023. Candidates are continuing to assert their victory, contributing to the prevailing uncertainty among the populace.

Candidate Statements and Claims

Issa Tchiroma, representing the Cameroon National Salvation Front (FSNC), has addressed both his supporters and national authorities. Since Sun, Tchiroma has released what he claims are official polling station reports that indicate a significant lead in the polls.

Vote Verification Process

The National Vote Counting Commission is currently engaged in the process of verifying and compiling the election results.

Appeals to Leadership and International Community

On Mon, Tchiroma made a direct appeal to outgoing President Paul Biya, who has governed Cameroon for 43 years, urging him to honor the electoral process and step down with dignity. Tchiroma emphasized the importance of avoiding electoral fraud at the conclusion of Biya’s long tenure.

Additionally, Tchiroma has called on neighboring countries, including Nigeria and Chad, as well as international bodies such as the African Union, European Union, United Nations, and nations like France and the United States, to actively engage in maintaining peace in Cameroon.
