Geofry Toroitich Kipchumba of Kenya and Aynalem Desta of Ethiopia secured victories at the 50th edition of the Amsterdam Marathon on Sun, Oct 19, 2023, in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Men’s Race

Geofry Toroitich Kipchumba set a new course record with a time of 2:03:30, marking the fourth-fastest marathon time of the year. The 25-year-old surpassed his personal best and outpaced the previous record set by Ethiopian Tamirat Tola at 2:03:39.

Women’s Race

Ethiopian Aynalem Desta emerged victorious in the women’s category, completing the marathon in 2:17:37.

Race Details

  • The starting list featured prominent athletes, including Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei and Gabriel Gaey.
  • A large group of runners maintained a competitive pace until the halfway mark along the Amstel River.
  • Kipchumba broke away at kilometer 33, running alone for seven kilometers to secure the record.
  • In the women’s race, six Ethiopian athletes remained contenders after 30 kilometers.
  • Desta achieved a personal best time of 2:17:37, with Bertukan Welde and Mekides Shimeles finishing with times of 2:17:56 and 2:19:56, respectively.
