Incident Report

Gasoline Tanker Explosion in Niger State, Nigeria

On Tue, a gasoline tanker truck exploded in the Bida area of Niger State, Nigeria, resulting in at least 31 fatalities, according to police reports. The incident occurred after the truck overturned, prompting residents to collect the spilling fuel. The explosion also injured 17 individuals, who have been transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Context and Investigation

Niger State has experienced an increase in heavy-duty truck accidents, attributed to poor road conditions and the lack of a rail network. Serving as a key transit point for commodities between northern and southern Nigeria, the state is frequently traversed by such vehicles.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the identities of the truck driver and owner, along with the cause of the accident, as stated by the police spokesperson.

Government Response

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago expressed concern over the recurring issue of residents attempting to collect gasoline from overturned tankers, highlighting the inherent dangers. He described the incident as a tragic occurrence for both the community and the state government.

Previous Incidents

In January, a separate incident in Niger State resulted in at least 98 deaths when individuals attempted to transfer gasoline from a crashed tanker using a generator. The practice of scavenging for gasoline has become more prevalent in Nigeria due to increased fuel prices following the removal of subsidies under President Bola Tinubu.
