Political Developments

Cameroon Presidential Election

On Sun, Oct 8, 2023, Cameroon conducted its presidential election, widely anticipated to extend the tenure of 92-year-old Paul Biya, Africa’s longest-serving leader. If re-elected, President Biya could potentially remain in office until age 99, furthering his leadership amidst the nation’s security and economic challenges.

Election Process and Candidates

The election included nine opposition candidates, although the electoral system favors the incumbent. Cameroon utilizes a single-round voting process where the candidate with the most votes wins, thereby eliminating a runoff that could unite opposition support. President Biya’s challengers feature several former allies and appointees, such as Bello Bouba Maigari, a former tourism minister, and Issa Tchiroma Bakary, a former employment minister.

Security and Socioeconomic Context

The election occurs amidst complex national crises. In the western regions, a violent secessionist conflict ensues between predominantly English-speaking separatists and government forces. Additionally, in the far north, the Boko Haram insurgency from neighboring Nigeria continues to affect border towns with frequent attacks. These security issues are coupled with socioeconomic challenges, as United Nations estimates indicate that at least 43% of Cameroon’s population lives in poverty.

Demographics and Voting

Cameroon has a population exceeding 29 million, predominantly young, which contrasts with its elder leader. Approximately 8 million registered voters, including over 34,000 from the diaspora, were eligible to vote at over 31,000 polling stations nationwide. Following the official closure of polls at 6 p.m., the nation awaits results expected no later than Thu, Oct 26, 2023.
