Nous en avons fini avec Teams , dclare un Etat allemand lanc dans une vaste opration d'abandon de solutions Microsoft Pour le libre et l'open source

## Open Source Transition in German and Danish Governments

Open Source Transition in German and Danish Governments

Recent developments in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, involve a strategic shift from Microsoft solutions to open-source alternatives. This transition, initiated in 2024, encompasses the migration from Microsoft Teams to a free software solution, and a full switch from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice, followed by a gradual transition to Linux on 30,000 workstations.

The decision echoes earlier moves by the city of Munich, which faced challenges due to insufficient coordination and sustainable political support during its LiMux project. In 2017, Munich's city council opted to abandon the LiMux project in favor of fully adopting Windows 10. Similarly, in 2018, Lower Saxony, another German federal state, announced a significant migration from Linux to Windows.

The authorities in Lower Saxony highlighted that many field agents and phone support services already utilized Windows, making standardization a logical step. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Finance explained that unifying existing desktop systems would streamline procedures and facilitate software development for the KONSENS network.

In Denmark, the Ministry of Digitization has announced plans to detach from Microsoft, starting with the adoption of LibreOffice. Caroline Olsen, the Danish Minister of Digital Affairs, revealed that half of the ministry's computers, including her own, are to be equipped with LibreOffice instead of Microsoft Office 365 by the end of the year.

This transition aligns with a broader European Union trend towards reducing reliance on foreign technology providers, especially those based in the United States. The move is not merely symbolic; it addresses concerns about the control and management of European data. By adopting open-source solutions like LibreOffice and Linux, Denmark aims to regain control over its digital ecosystem, ensuring transparency, enhanced audit capabilities, and freedom from proprietary systems.

Beyond sovereignty, economic factors significantly influence this decision. The rising costs of Microsoft software have impacted cities like Copenhagen. Transitioning to open-source alternatives offers substantial budgetary savings, which can be reinvested in developing local digital skills, open-source innovation, or other public priorities. Additionally, the impending end of Windows 10 support in October poses a financial and logistical challenge. Opting for Linux mitigates the need for costly upgrades to Windows 11 or extended support contracts.
