Surgeon Ghassan Abu Sittah Operates on War Wounded Children in Beirut

British-Palestinian plastic and reconstructive surgeon Ghassan Abu Sittah is conducting a series of operations in Beirut to treat children injured during conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza. Working from the headquarters of the Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund in the Hamra district, the surgeon has organized a schedule to address complex physical trauma among young patients.

According to a report by Middle East Eye, Abu Sittah’s current operating list includes 11 children. The cases involve a variety of severe injuries that require specialized surgical intervention. Among those scheduled for treatment are two siblings suffering from medical complications caused by shrapnel wounds sustained during the 2024 war.

Specialized Reconstructive Procedures

The surgical interventions aim to restore functionality and prepare patients for long-term recovery. One case involves a boy with a partial foot amputation who requires reconstructive surgery. Another patient, who also suffered an amputation, is undergoing surgery to finish a stump, a necessary step that will allow him to begin the process of prosthetic rehabilitation.

Additional procedures focus on joint salvage. The surgeon is scheduled to perform a prolonged reconstructive operation on a young boy with an elbow injury. The goal of this specific surgery is to save the elbow joint, which is critical for the patient's future mobility.

Regional Medical Response

Abu Sittah, a prominent figure in reconstructive surgery, has focused his efforts on treating the victims of Israel’s wars on Gaza and Lebanon. His work in Beirut addresses the long-term medical needs of children whose injuries from these conflicts have become life-altering. The Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund serves as the primary hub for these specialized medical services in the Lebanese capital.
