The Middle East experienced the highest number of journalist deaths, with 69 fatalities, including 51 in Gaza.
In Africa, nine journalists were killed. Sudan was the most affected, with six fatalities, amid ongoing conflict since April 15, 2023. Other deaths were reported in Mozambique, Somalia, and Zimbabwe.
In Europe, 10 journalists were killed: eight in Ukraine, one in Russia, and one in Turkey. This marks the third instance in the past decade of high journalist fatalities in Europe, following significant events in 2015 and 2022.

The Asia-Pacific region reported 15 journalist deaths, including four in India, three in Pakistan, three in the Philippines, two in Bangladesh, two in Afghanistan, and one in Nepal.
Around the globe, over 500 journalists are currently imprisoned. Africa holds 27 journalists in detention, with Eritrea being the largest incarcerator. In the Asia-Pacific region, 277 journalists are imprisoned, with China (including Hong Kong) holding 143, Myanmar 49, and Vietnam 37.
The IFJ report highlights ongoing challenges faced by journalists, including direct targeting and imprisonment, which contravene international law.
