Nigerian Troops Repel Bandit Attack on Kebbi Workers

Nigerian Army troops have repelled an attack by bandits on construction workers in Kebbi State, rescuing those targeted and recovering abandoned motorcycles.

The incident highlights the persistent challenge of banditry in Nigeria’s northwest, where armed groups frequently target rural communities, infrastructure projects and travellers. Kebbi State, which borders Niger to the north and shares borders with several other northern Nigerian states, has faced repeated security incidents in recent years.

According to Punch Nigeria, soldiers responded promptly to the assault and successfully drove the attackers away. The troops then secured the area and recovered motorcycles that the bandits had left behind during their retreat.

The construction workers were rescued without reported casualties among them, although the dispatch provides no further details on injuries or the identity of the construction firm involved.

Banditry in the northwest typically involves loosely organised criminal groups engaged in kidnapping for ransom, cattle rustling and attacks on villages. These groups often operate from forest reserves that straddle several states, making coordinated military responses more complex.

The Nigerian military has conducted multiple operations in the region over recent years, establishing forward bases and increasing patrols along key roads and development sites. Kebbi has seen both military deployments and community self-defence initiatives as residents seek protection from such raids.

Security analysts note that attacks on construction projects can delay infrastructure development and deter investment in northern states already struggling with economic challenges. The successful repulsion of this latest assault may provide temporary relief to workers in the affected area.

The military has not issued a public statement on the incident, and no arrests have been reported so far.
