Côte d’Ivoire Names New Leader for Blé Goudé’s COJEP Party
Martial Yavo, a longtime loyalist and education inspector, has been appointed secretary general of the Congress of Young Patriots following the surprise departure of Patrice Saraka.
Martial Yavo has been named secretary general of the Congress of Young Patriots (COJEP), the Ivorian political movement founded by Charles Blé Goudé, after the unexpected exit of his predecessor Patrice Saraka.
The appointment aims to reorganise the party and prepare it for future political challenges in Côte d’Ivoire. Yavo, who previously worked as an education inspector, is described as a discreet figure who has supported Blé Goudé since the movement’s early days.
His elevation comes at a time when the COJEP seeks to regain momentum within the country’s opposition landscape. Blé Goudé, a former youth leader during the post-election crisis of 2010-2011, remains an influential but controversial figure in Ivorian politics. He has been living abroad after facing international charges that were later dropped.
Yavo is viewed as a man of the shadows rather than a public orator. His background in education has kept him away from the spotlight, yet his long-standing personal loyalty to Blé Goudé is seen as his main qualification for the role. According to Jeune Afrique, the new secretary general must now restore internal discipline and ready the party for renewed political activity.

After the 2010-2011 crisis that led to the arrest of former president Laurent Gbagbo and the exile of several allies including Blé Goudé, the movement has struggled to maintain cohesion.
Observers note that the surprise departure of Saraka created an immediate leadership vacuum. Yavo’s promotion is intended to fill that gap with a trusted insider rather than an outsider who might shift the party’s direction.
The party’s future relevance will depend on how effectively Yavo can unify its members and articulate a clear position on national issues such as reconciliation, economic policy and electoral reform. Côte d’Ivoire has experienced relative stability in recent years under President Alassane Ouattara, yet opposition groups continue to seek greater political space.

يهدف التعيين إلى إعادة تنظيم الحزب وإعداده للتحديات السياسية المقبلة في ساحل العاج. ويوصف يافو، الذي عمل سابقا مفتشا للتربية، بأنه شخصية هادئة دعمت بلي غودي منذ الأيام الأولى للحركة.

تأسست كوجيب أصلا كمنظمة شبابية مؤيدة لغباغبو خلال السنوات المضطربة في العقد الأول من الألفية. ولعبت دورا مرئيا في الاحتجاجات الشوارعية والتعبئة السياسية في أبيدجان ومدن أخرى. وبعد أزمة 2010-2011 التي أدت إلى اعتقال الرئيس السابق لوران غباغبو ونفي عدد من الحلفاء بمن فيهم بلي غودي، واجهت الحركة صعوبة في الحفاظ على تماسكها.
لاحظ مراقبون أن خروج ساراكا المفاجئ أوجد فراغا قياديا فوريا. ويهدف تعيين يافو إلى ملء هذا الفراغ بشخص داخلي موثوق به بدلا من شخص خارجي قد يغير اتجاه الحزب.
