At least 17 individuals attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea in an inflatable boat have perished after the vessel capsized south of the island of Crete, according to Greek authorities.
The partially submerged dinghy was discovered on Saturday, 36 nautical miles off the coast of Ierapetra, by a Turkish merchant ship. The rescue operation involved a ship and a plane from the European border agency Frontex, a Greek Coast Guard helicopter, and three merchant vessels.
Two Egyptian men were rescued by the coast guard and transported to a hospital with symptoms of hypothermia, starvation, and dehydration.

However, there has been a recent increase in arrivals from Libya to Crete.
The origin of the capsized boat has not yet been determined by authorities.
