The bodies of two Nigerian nationals, Hamzat Kazeen Kolawole and Mbah Stephen Udoka, who were serving in the 423rd Guards Motor Rifle Regiment of the Russian armed forces, have been discovered in eastern Ukraine, according to a statement from Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence.
The individuals signed contracts with the Russian military in 2025, with Kolawole signing on Aug. 29 and Udoka on Sept. 28. Neither received military training prior to their deployment.
The bodies were found in the Luhansk region, part of the Donbas area in eastern Ukraine. The Directorate reported that both individuals were killed in late November during an attempted assault on Ukrainian positions. They were eliminated by a drone strike before engaging in combat.
The individuals signed contracts with the Russian military in 2025, with Kolawole signing on Aug.
The conflict, initiated by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has primarily affected the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine. The ongoing hostilities have disrupted global food and energy markets and resulted in the displacement of millions of Ukrainians.
