Approximately 30 individuals, predominantly soldiers, have been incarcerated in Benin following a failed coup attempt that occurred earlier this month. The soldiers had seized control of state television on Thu, Dec 7, 2023, declaring the dissolution of the government. However, their attempt was unsuccessful due to intervention by loyalist military forces, supported by airstrikes and military assistance from Nigeria and other West African nations. Logistical support was also provided by France.
The detainees were imprisoned on Tue, Dec 12, 2023, subsequent to a pre-trial hearing. They face charges including treason, murder, and endangering state security.
Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri, alleged leader of the coup, remains at large. Beninese authorities indicate that he has fled to Lomé, the capital of Togo, and have requested his extradition along with other fugitive soldiers.
