CAF President Patrice Motsepe Addresses Title Decision

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) president, Patrice Motsepe, has addressed the decision to alter the outcome of the Africa Cup of Nations final. Originally, Senegal's 1-0 victory over Morocco in the Rabat final was revised to a 3-0 default win for the host nation by the CAF appeals board.

Judicial Independence and Decision Process

Motsepe emphasized the independence of CAF's judicial processes, highlighting the involvement of judges and legal experts from across its 54 member nations to ensure integrity and neutrality. He noted that different conclusions from CAF's internal bodies demonstrate this independence.

The CAF disciplinary board initially made one decision, while the CAF appeals board reached a different conclusion. Motsepe mentioned that Senegal intends to appeal, reinforcing the importance of the appeals process.

Right to Challenge and Further Investigations

Countries retain the right to challenge outcomes, including through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Following the ruling, Senegal has requested an independent international investigation into suspected corruption within CAF.

Motsepe affirmed that CAF will adhere to and respect any decision made by CAS, ensuring that no African country receives preferential treatment.

Motsepe acknowledged ongoing concerns regarding officiating and governance, identifying them as long-standing issues in African football.

Ensuring fairness and credibility in decisions is a priority for CAF. Motsepe emphasized the importance of ordinary football supporters perceiving CAF's judicial decisions as fair, with integrity and impartiality.
