African Union demands Israel reverse recognition of Somaliland

The African Union (AU) Council for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security issued a statement on Tuesday condemning the unilateral recognition of the so-called 'Republic of Somaliland' by Israel.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar recently visited Somaliland, ten days following Israel's formal recognition of the region as an independent state. The government of Somalia has expressed strong disapproval of this visit, labeling it as unacceptable interference in the internal affairs of a United Nations member state. Somalia argues that this action contravenes the UN Charter, the AU's founding act, and established international norms regarding relations between sovereign states.

During his visit, Minister Sa’ar held discussions with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, followed by a joint press conference at the presidential palace.

These events have heightened diplomatic tensions in the Horn of Africa, emphasizing the contentious status of Somaliland. The situation raises significant concerns over the practice of unilateral recognition of self-declared states.

The response from the AU and Somalia highlights the delicate balance of regional politics and the complexities involved in international recognition of contested territories.
