Arson attack on governing party office as election tentions mount in Cameroon

The office of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (RDPC) in Dschang was set on fire on Wed, marking an escalation of tensions following the presidential election. The opposition candidate, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, has disputed the election results, claiming victory over President Paul Biya, who has been in power for 42 years.

Images of the incident circulated widely online. Jean Nkuete, the Secretary General, has announced plans to initiate legal action against those responsible for the arson.

Tchiroma, a former minister, has alleged systematic vote tampering and declared himself the winner, urging President Biya to concede. The RDPC has dismissed these claims, accusing Tchiroma of attempting to disrupt the electoral process.

Following the allegations, protests have erupted in several cities, including Douala. Demonstrators set up burning barricades, leading to confrontations with security forces who responded with tear gas and water cannons. Several individuals were arrested near the election management body's office.

The prefect of Wouri department has condemned the unrest and urged citizens to allow the competent authorities to address electoral disputes.

The nation is currently awaiting the official election results, which are expected from the constitutional court by Thu, Oct 26, 2023. Analysts had previously predicted a victory for Biya, the world's oldest president, in an election where his strongest rival was excluded from the race.

Tchiroma’s campaign, supported by a coalition of opposition groups, represents a significant challenge to Biya's extended rule. The country continues to grapple with a separatist conflict and widespread corruption.
