Benin's Opposition Party Announces Election Stance
On the upcoming presidential election scheduled for Sat, Apr 12, 2024, Benin's main opposition party, The Democrats, has declared that it will not endorse any candidate. This decision follows the disqualification of their own nominee due to insufficient parliamentary support.
The candidates in the election are Romuald Wangari, the successor endorsed by President Patrice Talon, and Paul Hounkpe from the opposition FCBE.
During a meeting held in Cotonou on Sun, Apr 6, 2024, the general secretary of The Democrats stated that while the party will not support either candidate, it remains open to dialogue within a republican framework.

Recent developments have posed challenges for The Democrats. The party's leader, former President Thomas Boni Yayi, resigned earlier this month due to health concerns. Additionally, his son, Chabi, departed the party following an arrest related to an alleged coup attempt. The party also lost all 28 parliamentary seats to the ruling coalition in the January elections.
In the same meeting, former MP Noureini Atchade was elected as the new leader of The Democrats. He has urged party members to organize and mobilize efforts to re-energize the nation.
President Talon is set to conclude his second term in office next month.
