His work was crucial in documenting the ivory poaching crisis, which resulted in the loss of over half of Africa's elephant population in a decade. This led to a significant intergovernmental decision to ban the international trade in ivory in 1989.
The Uganda Conservation Foundation recognized Douglas-Hamilton for sharing his knowledge and expertise, which inspired action and collaboration within the conservation community.
