Burkina Faso Joins Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage

On Tue, Oct 10, 2023, Burkina Faso’s Transitional Assembly unanimously voted to accede to the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage. This move is a critical step in the nation's efforts to establish a nuclear reactor, providing a legal framework that governs civil liability in the event of nuclear damage.

Previously, in June, Burkina Faso entered into an agreement with Russia to construct a nuclear power plant. This initiative is aimed at enhancing the country's energy capacity and ensuring greater energy security. Notably, Russia's state-owned nuclear company, Rosatom, has established approximately 20 nuclear energy partnerships across Africa.
