Provisional Release of Former Burundi Prime Minister Bunyoni
Burundi's former Prime Minister, General Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni, who is serving a life sentence for conspiracy against the head of state, was provisionally released on medical grounds on Wed, Oct 2025. This decision was confirmed by judicial sources and relatives.
Bunyoni, who has been hospitalized since Oct 2025 at Gitega regional hospital, was granted provisional freedom due to his deteriorating health. An ambulance transported him to his home in Bujumbura around midday. It was reported that his health condition is significantly concerning.

Bunyoni, who has been hospitalized since Oct 2025 at Gitega regional hospital, was granted provisional freedom due to his deteriorating health.
General Bunyoni, once considered a key figure in the regime and a hardliner leader under former President Pierre Nkurunziza, was appointed prime minister in Jun 2020 by President Evariste Ndayishimiye. His dismissal occurred in Sep 2022 following allegations of a coup plot by President Ndayishimiye.
In Dec 2023, Bunyoni was convicted of several charges, including attempting to overthrow the government, threatening the president's life, illegal enrichment, and economic destabilization. He has denied all charges.
There were demands from ruling party generals for his release, and President Ndayishimiye reportedly resolved to free him to reunite his political camp.
