The repatriation effort has intensified, with recent weeks seeing the dismantling of two major refugee camps in Tanzania. Approximately 4,200 individuals have returned from the Nduta refugee camp.
Government and Organizational Involvement
According to Bernard Ntwari, UNHCR spokesperson in Burundi, the repatriation process has been met with positive reception by the returnees. The Burundian Ministry of the Interior, led by Director-General Odette Kamariza, has expedited the process since late December, aiming to complete repatriations from the Nduta and Nyarugusu camps by June.
