Provisional Results of Cameroon's Presidential Election

The National Vote Counting Commission has released provisional results from Cameroon's recent presidential election. The current president, Paul Biya, is reported to have received over 53% of the votes, surpassing his main opponent Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who garnered 35%.

The preliminary results have been contested. Opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma has claimed victory, stating that his own tally shows him receiving approximately 60% of the votes. He has called for greater transparency, challenging the accuracy of the official figures.

The announcement of the provisional results has led to heightened tensions in Cameroon. Demonstrations have occurred throughout the country, with some protesters alleging electoral fraud. In several major cities, these protests have resulted in clashes with security forces.

The Constitutional Council is expected to publish the official results by Thu, Oct 26, 2023. If confirmed, the results would extend Paul Biya's tenure, marking over 42 years of leadership in Cameroon. At 92 years old, Biya remains one of Africa's longest-serving leaders.
