The National Assembly of Cameroon has elected Théodore Datouo as its new president on Tuesday, ending the 34-year leadership of Cavaye Yeguié Djibril. Datouo, previously the vice president of the assembly and a deputy from Bangou in the Western Region, was chosen by the Central Committee of the ruling RDPC party.

Cavaye Yeguié Djibril, who represented the Mayo-Sava constituency in the Far North region, had served as the president since the reintroduction of multiparty politics in the early 1990s.

The new president, Théodore Datouo, managed the construction of the parliament's new headquarters, known as the "Paul Biya Glass Palace." His appointment signifies a notable shift in the political environment, although it maintains continuity within the ruling party's leadership.

The leadership change has been perceived by civil society as an important moment in Cameroonian politics. It is regarded as a test of the credibility and independence of the Parliament. Observers are also considering potential changes in leadership at the Senate.
