Campaign Launch Amid Security Concerns

The presidential campaign commenced on Sat, Oct 7, 2023, under unique circumstances. Social Democratic Front (SDF) candidate Joshua Osih initiated his campaign in Bamenda, navigating a separatist-imposed lockdown. Osih emphasized his commitment to resolving the ongoing security crisis in the English-speaking regions.

Osih declared, "No other candidate knows the North-West and South-West better than I do," and promised to prioritize peace from the beginning of his tenure if elected.

In Yaoundé, candidate Bello Bouba Maigari held a campaign launch characterized by coalition-building efforts. Maigari was joined by Ateki Sexta Carson, who withdrew from the race to support him. Maigari announced a united front, expressing optimism about his candidacy.

Supporters, including Marie Jeanne Abega, voiced confidence in Maigari's leadership potential.

The ruling party's campaign commenced without its candidate, the 89-year-old incumbent Paul Biya. Despite his absence, supporters, particularly the youth, expressed unwavering support for his continued leadership.

Opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary was also notably absent, with his team indicating that his program will be released shortly.

With 13 days remaining until the election, candidates are focused on persuading nearly 8 million registered voters nationwide.
