President Faustin-Archange Touadéra has been re-elected for a third term, according to provisional results from the Central African Republic's electoral authority. Touadéra secured over 76 percent of the vote, while Anicet-Georges Dologuele received 15 percent, and Henri-Marie Dondra garnered three percent.
Electoral Process and Voter Participation
The election marked a significant event for the Central African Republic, with approximately 2.4 million citizens registered to vote. This election allowed citizens to vote simultaneously for presidential, legislative, regional, and municipal positions. Voter turnout was reported at around 52 percent.
Despite the declared results, opposition candidates have contested the outcome, citing alleged malpractice and fraud by the National Elections Authority. Anicet-Georges Dologuele, one of the opposition leaders, claimed victory and pointed to significant irregularities, which President Touadéra's office has dismissed.
African Union observers have reported that the elections proceeded peacefully. Final results are expected to be announced later this month after a review of any appeals.
