Paul Ferreri was in Chad as part of a group attending the International Festival of Saharan Cultures in Amdjarass. The group had been exploring the region when Ferreri, along with another French national, departed without a guide to explore the Guelta de Bachikele area. This expedition was undertaken without prior authorization or within established supervision arrangements, as per the tourism ministry's statement.
A search operation was initiated when the two individuals were reported missing by early afternoon on the same day. The operation utilized multiple resources, including motorcycles, jeeps, camels, drones, and a Chadian army aircraft.
The individual, aged 70, was found in the Bachikele mountains following a fall.
The accompanying individual was found after two hours, having become disoriented while attempting to convince Ferreri to return.
The tourism ministry emphasizes the importance of adhering to established supervision protocols and obtaining necessary authorizations when exploring remote areas. Visitors are urged to prioritize safety and utilize local guides when visiting unfamiliar territories.
