Ghana has revised its farmgate cocoa rate paid to farmers following a decrease in global cocoa prices. This adjustment aligns local prices with international market levels to stimulate demand. Ghana ranks as the world's second-largest cocoa producer.
The country has faced challenges in compensating farmers due to a significant decrease in cocoa demand, which led to global cocoa prices dropping to approximately $4,000 per metric ton.
As a consequence, payment delays resulted in financial difficulties for many farmers, affecting their ability to purchase food and maintain farms. In addition, unsold cocoa stocks accumulated on farms.
Ghana has revised its farmgate cocoa rate paid to farmers following a decrease in global cocoa prices.
Previously, the farmgate price set by the market regulator, Cocobod, was nearly $5,300 per ton. The updated price is $3,580 per metric ton for the remainder of the 2025/2026 season.
Ghanaian authorities have instructed the market regulator to commence the immediate repayment of all affected cocoa farmers.
