Djimpe Landry, a partner at Innogence Consulting, highlighted the necessity for the DRC to prioritize clauses that ensure local industrialization and job creation. However, balancing foreign investment with national resource sovereignty presents a significant challenge. With global powers like China and the U.S. competing for access, Congo's negotiating leverage is substantial, though the risk of exploitation persists.
In Tunisia, a biotech startup has initiated a novel approach to sustainability by processing over 5,000 tonnes of blue crab waste into pharmaceutical-grade chitosan, a biodegradable and versatile biomaterial. Chitosan has applications in medicine, agriculture, and as a potential plastic substitute. This initiative not only addresses an ecological issue but also positions Tunisia as a leader in sustainable biotech innovation in the Global South.

Africa is experiencing a shift towards sustainable fertilisation to address agricultural productivity challenges caused by poor soil fertility and limited fertiliser access. Unlike Europe's reliance on chemical fertilisers, Africa is adopting agroecological solutions that naturally fix nitrogen into the soil. This reduces dependence on costly imports and harmful chemicals, offering a pathway to increased yields and environmental protection.
Wlodek Bogucki, an investor, expressed that scaling sustainable fertilisation could enable Africa to become a global food powerhouse, potentially transforming the continent into a key supplier for the world.
