Criminals Disguise as Separatists in Southeast Nigeria Kidnappings
Bandits and other criminals commit most kidnappings in Nigeria's South East while posing as members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, according to a Nigerian research group.

A research report has found that the majority of kidnapping incidents in Nigeria's South East region are carried out by bandits and other criminals who disguise themselves as members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN).
These perpetrators engage in a wide spectrum of violent crimes and extortion against local residents while claiming links to the secessionist group, the study by experts from Nextier SPD revealed. The South East, comprising states such as Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, has faced persistent security challenges in recent years.
IPOB advocates for the independence of the Igbo-dominated region, which it calls Biafra, referencing the short-lived republic that declared independence from Nigeria in 1967. The group and its armed elements have been involved in clashes with Nigerian security forces.
The research indicates that criminals exploit the presence of these separatist agitators to mask their own activities. By pretending to act on behalf of IPOB or ESN, the bandits seek to deflect responsibility and perhaps gain some measure of local acquiescence or fear.

This pattern complicates efforts by Nigerian authorities to address the root causes of insecurity in the region. Security operations have targeted both separatist militants and criminal groups, but the overlap in tactics and claimed affiliations makes attribution difficult.
The findings highlight how ordinary citizens bear the brunt of these crimes through direct violence and financial extortion. The report underscores the need for more precise intelligence and targeted responses to distinguish between politically motivated actors and purely criminal elements.
Nigeria's South East has seen fluctuating levels of violence linked to both separatism and banditry. The situation adds to broader national security concerns that also affect other regions, including the North East and North West where different militant and criminal networks operate.
