The reduction has reversed progress in combating diseases such as HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis. It has also affected services like the provision of free contraception at family planning clinics.
Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM)
The Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM), a pivotal organization in rural healthcare, has had to cease its mobile clinic operations, which were critical for remote villages.
Following the reduction in funding to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), there has been a significant impact on healthcare services in Malawi.
FPAM received two major grants that facilitated its operations, particularly in underserved areas. The suspension of services has led to an increase in unplanned pregnancies in affected regions.
There has been a decline in support, treatment, and care for individuals with HIV-AIDS. The cessation of US-funded specialized care has severely affected patients relying on these services.
Approximately one million of Malawi's population of 22 million live with HIV. The United States previously contributed 60 percent of Malawi's HIV treatment budget.
