Following a recent attack on a fuel tanker convoy in western Mali, authorities have attributed the incident to jihadist groups. The attack, which resulted in the death of at least 15 individuals, occurred amid efforts to ease a prolonged fuel blockade in the region.
According to local officials, several tankers were destroyed on Thursday along a significant route connecting the Senegalese border to Kayes. The Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) claimed responsibility for an ambush on Malian forces in the vicinity but did not explicitly mention the tankers.
Since September, JNIM has been targeting fuel convoys as part of a blockade strategy aimed at hindering Mali's economic activities. Although there had been a reduction in such attacks recently, with fuel supplies stabilizing particularly in Bamako, this incident is noted as the most severe since early December.
