Displaced Families in Kordofan Resort to Animal Feed as Food Insecurity Deepens
Rising grain prices and a lack of humanitarian aid in West Kordofan have forced residents to consume ambaz, a livestock byproduct, to survive a severe food crisis.
Displaced populations in the Ed Daein locality of West Kordofan are facing extreme hunger, with some families now consuming animal feed to survive. According to humanitarian activist Huweida Abdelrahman Saleh, the region is experiencing a period of unbearable hardship as essential food supplies become unaffordable for the majority of the population.
The consumption of ambaz, a pressed cake made from oilseeds typically reserved for livestock, marks a critical downturn in the humanitarian situation. This shift in diet follows a sharp increase in the price of staple grains across the locality. Reports indicate that a malwa—a local unit of measurement—of millet has reached a price of 20,000 Sudanese Pounds (SDG), placing basic nutrition beyond the reach of many households.
Economic collapse in the region has compounded the crisis. Most traditional sources of income have disappeared, leaving families without the means to purchase food even when it is available in local markets. The lack of financial resources, combined with the inflated cost of staples, has left thousands of displaced individuals in a state of total dependency on external support that has yet to materialize at the necessary scale.

Efforts to mitigate the starvation have been hampered by significant logistical challenges. Humanitarian aid has struggled to reach this specific area of West Kordofan, leaving a void in the emergency response. Without consistent corridors for food delivery, the reliance on animal feed is likely to continue as families attempt to avert mass starvation. The situation in Ed Daein reflects a broader trend of food insecurity affecting various parts of Sudan, where conflict and economic instability have disrupted agricultural cycles and supply chains.
