Argungu Fishing Festival Resumes Amid Medical Incidents

Several participants required hospitalization on Fri, during pre-finale events at the annual Argungu Fishing Festival in northwestern Nigeria. These incidents occurred during endurance contests preceding the main fishing competition, which attracts numerous visitors to Kebbi State.

The Argungu Fishing Festival, originating in 1934 as a peace initiative between the Sokoto Caliphate and Kebbi Kingdom, features traditional music, dance, wrestling, and canoe racing. The central event involves fishermen entering the Matan Fada River with gourds to catch the largest fish.

With the festival last held in 2020, its return marks an improvement in regional security conditions. Muhammad Balarabe, a local resident, expressed contentment with the festival's resumption, noting the absence of previous security challenges.
