The M23 has not issued any statements regarding the incident. The Rubaya mining site is a significant contributor to the global supply of coltan, accounting for 15 to 30% of this essential rare earth material used in computer technology and smartphones. The M23 has maintained control over this strategic location following its offensive against the Congolese armed forces in the previous year.
