The M23, backed by Rwanda, resumed armed activities in 2021 and has since captured extensive areas in the mineral-rich eastern region of the Congo, escalating violence in the area.
Witnesses reported hearing explosions and drone activity in multiple residential areas of Goma, a city located near the Rwandan border. A drone strike was confirmed, with one device reportedly impacting the residence of a UNICEF staff member.
According to the AFC/M23, the drone was allegedly launched by the Congolese army, though there has been no official statement from the government regarding these claims.
