EU Commissioner Hadja Lahbib concluded a regional tour in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, focusing on the importance of international humanitarian law amidst ongoing conflicts. The visit highlighted the humanitarian challenges faced in the region.
This marked the first visit by a European delegation to Goma since the city was taken by M23/AFC rebels in January 2025.

During her visit, Commissioner Lahbib engaged with hospital officials and emphasized the presence of increasing violations of international humanitarian law. She also met with Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi in Kinshasa and Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Kigali.
In discussions with M23/AFC representatives, Lahbib noted positive signs towards dialogue, peace, and a ceasefire. The M23 has reportedly agreed to release prisoners from the Wazalendo militia and the Congolese armed forces.
