Egypt has initiated a diplomatic challenge against Ethiopia, citing "reckless and irresponsible" management of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Recent unilateral water releases from the dam have been linked to severe flooding in Sudan, raising concerns for Egyptian territories.
The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Egypt has condemned Ethiopia's actions, stating that these measures violate international law. The ministry characterized the operation of the dam as "reckless unilateral measures" that pose a "direct threat to the lives and security of the peoples of the downstream states."
Egypt further contends that Ethiopia's actions reveal the inaccuracy of its previous assurances of causing no harm.

Egypt claims that Ethiopia opened the dam's gates without coordination, resulting in a sudden surge of water that, combined with heavy rainfall, inundated Sudanese villages and agricultural lands.
Emergency Protocols and Diplomatic Tensions
In response to the situation, Egyptian authorities have activated emergency protocols. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly issued a warning that water levels are projected to rise through October, posing a threat to northern regions. Evacuations have been ordered in areas such as Beheira and Monufia, with reports of flooding already affecting lands in the Ashmoun District.
This situation has intensified diplomatic tensions. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's commitment to defending its existential interests and water rights by all available means, highlighting the critical nature of the ongoing dispute over the Nile's waters.
