Egypt announces discovery of Thutmose II royal tomb
Egyptian authorities have located the burial site of an 18th dynasty king, the first such royal find since Howard Carter uncovered Tutankhamun’s tomb over a century ago.

Egypt’s antiquities authority has announced the discovery of the tomb of King Thutmose II near the Valley of the Kings in Luxor.
The find represents the first royal burial uncovered since the 1922 excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Thutmose II ruled during Egypt’s 18th dynasty in the second millennium BCE.
The location lies in southern Egypt, an area long associated with New Kingdom pharaohs. The Valley of the Kings served as the primary burial ground for many rulers of that period.
According to Vanguard Nigeria, the antiquities authority confirmed the identification of the tomb as belonging to Thutmose II. Details about the state of the chamber or any accompanying artefacts were not released in the initial announcement.

Egypt has invested heavily in archaeological projects and heritage tourism in recent years. Luxor remains a focal point for such efforts, drawing international visitors to its temples and burial sites.
The 18th dynasty, to which both Thutmose II and Tutankhamun belonged, marked a high point of ancient Egyptian power and artistic achievement. Thutmose II’s reign preceded the more widely known rule of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III.
Archaeological work in the region continues despite challenges posed by environmental factors and urban development pressures near the Nile. Discoveries of this nature often generate renewed global interest in Egypt’s pharaonic past.
