Amhara, the second most populous region in Ethiopia with around 23 million residents, has experienced increased insurgency activities since Apr 2023 following the federal government's initiative to disarm local ethnic militias known as the Fano.
The strike targeted a pro-government camp in the Waghemira area. Local authorities were informed by the army the following day that the strike was an error, despite reports that the drone had hovered over the camp before releasing its payload.

An army spokesperson stated they had not received any information about the incident. The region is experiencing multiple insurgency challenges, particularly in Amhara and Oromia, alongside heightened tensions with Eritrea.
According to data from the conflict monitoring group ACLED, more than 669 individuals have been killed in over 70 drone strikes in the Amhara region since 2023.
