Ethiopia revokes media licence of independent outlet Addis Standard

Ethiopia has revoked the license of the online media outlet Addis Standard, citing concerns over national interests. This decision was announced by the Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) on Tue, Feb 24, 2026. The EMA, whose director is appointed by the lower house of parliament, stated that Addis Standard has consistently violated media ethics and Ethiopian laws, posing risks to national interests.

The EMA indicated that Addis Standard had disregarded multiple warnings to amend its practices. Consequently, the registration certificate of Addis Standard has been revoked, effective immediately.

Addis Standard is recognized as one of Ethiopia's few independent media outlets, with a substantial following. It has reported on conflicts in regions such as Amhara and Tigray, where tensions have been escalating.

This action is part of a broader governmental crackdown on journalists, as Ethiopia approaches its legislative elections scheduled for early June. Previously, in February, press credentials were not renewed for three Ethiopian Reuters correspondents following an investigation into a paramilitary training base allegation. In December, other local journalists faced suspensions and non-renewal of credentials.

Currently, four journalists are being prosecuted on terrorism charges and face the death penalty, although executions are infrequent. Reporters without Borders (RSF) has noted that Ethiopia's media environment remains polarized under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's administration.
