Experts warn famine conditions spreading in Sudan's Darfur region

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) initiative has reported the emergence of famine conditions in Sudan's North Darfur state, now affecting the towns of Um Baru and Kernoi. These areas have surpassed the acute malnutrition thresholds, according to the latest data.

The situation intensified following the capture of the state capital, el-Fasher, by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in October of the previous year. This event led to significant displacement of residents into surrounding regions.

The movement of a large number of individuals suffering from hunger and malnutrition into already vulnerable areas of North Darfur is expected to significantly increase the number of people experiencing severe food insecurity.

In Um Baru, the proportion of acutely malnourished children under five years old is reported to be nearly double the famine threshold, affecting 53% of children. In Kernoi, nearly one-third of children are experiencing acute malnutrition.

The IPC alert follows the confirmation of famine conditions in el-Fasher and South Kordofan's capital, Kadugli, almost three months prior. Kadugli had been under a siege by the RSF since the onset of the civil war in April 2023, until the blockade was lifted this week.

IPC experts warn that 20 additional areas in Sudan's Darfur and neighboring Kordofan are at risk of famine. Recent United Nations data indicates that ongoing conflict in Kordofan, a major battleground, has displaced approximately 88,000 people since October.

Currently, over 21 million people across Sudan, representing nearly half of the population, are facing acute food insecurity. Two-thirds of the population require urgent assistance.
