The event, known as the Eddy Kenzo Carnival: Twende Tupaate, had been organised at Hotel Santa Maria. When the show did not go ahead on the Saturday night in question, attendees turned violent and caused damage estimated in the millions of shillings, according to The Independent UG.
The incident highlights the frustration that can build when large public events in Uganda fail to materialise. Arua, a commercial hub close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, regularly hosts such performances that draw crowds from across the West Nile region.
Ugandan musicians like Eddy Kenzo enjoy significant followings across the country and the East African region. His decision to stage a carnival in Arua had generated considerable local anticipation, with many fans purchasing tickets and travelling to attend.
