Religious Harmony in Sierra Leone Amidst Political Challenges

Religious communities in Sierra Leone are demonstrating a harmonious coexistence despite the nation's political challenges. This year, Christian Lent and Muslim Ramadan overlap, allowing adherents of both faiths to observe their religious practices concurrently and peacefully.

According to Sheik Sillah, Chief Imam of Masjid Rahman, "There's no problem between our religions. The Christians are observing, and so are we. We're all in the same community; they have their churches and we have our mosques. They do not disturb us in our mosques, and we don’t disturb them in their churches."

Saidu Saccoh Kargbo is preparing to observe Lent, a significant 40-day fasting period in the Christian calendar, leading up to Easter. However, not all family members join him in this observance. His granddaughter, Isatu Kamara, is observing Ramadan instead.

The religious diversity within families, such as Kargbo's, is common in Sierra Leone. Kargbo notes, "I have Muslim friends who bring me porridge for Iftar, even though I do not fast during Ramadan. Likewise, when it is time for Christmas, my wife cooks and shares food with our neighbors."

Strengthening Interfaith Relationships

Rev. Fr. Thomas Aloma Gogra, Priest of the Holy Cross Parish, expressed that celebrating these sacred months together strengthens interfaith relationships. "A moment like this, when God makes it possible for us to celebrate these sacred months as Muslims and Christians simultaneously, it makes us feel happy as it strengthens our relationship more and more," he stated.

According to national government statistics from 2020, approximately 77 percent of Sierra Leone’s population are Muslim, 22 percent are Christian, and about 2 percent practice animism or other traditional religions.
